Sale of printed or engraved substance containing defamatory matter
Section 502 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (Sale of printed or engraved substance containing defamatory matter) corresponds to Section 356(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, in force from 1 July 2024. Under the BNSS First Schedule, BNS 356(4) is non-cognizable, bailable, triable by Court of Session; punishment: Simple imprisonment for 2 years, or fine, or both.

The BNS applies to offences committed on or after 1 July 2024. Offences committed earlier are charged and tried under the IPC.
(4) Whoever sells or offers for sale any printed or engraved substance containing defamatory matter, knowing that it contains such matter, shall be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.
