135. Whoever assaults or uses criminal force to any person, in attempting wrongfully to confine that person, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to five thousand rupees, or with both.

Section 357 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (Assault or criminal force in attempt wrongfully to confine a person) corresponds to Section 135 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, in force from 1 July 2024. Under the BNSS First Schedule, BNS 135 is cognizable, bailable, triable by Any Magistrate; punishment: Imprisonment for 1 year, or fine of 5,000 rupees, or both.
