“Attempt to commit suicide”
Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (“Attempt to commit suicide”) corresponds to Section 226 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, in force from 1 July 2024. Under the BNSS First Schedule, BNS 226 is non-cognizable, bailable, triable by Any Magistrate; punishment: Imprisonment for 1 year, or fine, or both, or community service.

The BNS applies to offences committed on or after 1 July 2024. Offences committed earlier are charged and tried under the IPC.
226. Whoever attempts to commit suicide with the intent to compel or restrain any public servant from discharging his official duty shall be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both, or with community service.
