283. Whoever exhibits any false light, mark or buoy, intending or knowing it to be likely that such exhibition will mislead any navigator, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to seven years, and with fine which shall not be less than ten thousand rupees.

Section 281 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (Exhibition of false light, mark or buoy) corresponds to Section 283 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, in force from 1 July 2024. Under the BNSS First Schedule, BNS 283 is cognizable, bailable, triable by Magistrate of the first class; punishment: Imprisonment for 7 years, and fine which shall not be less than 10,000 rupees.
