IPC Section 183 in BNS: Section 218

Resistance to the taking of property by the lawful authority of a public servant

Section 183 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (Resistance to the taking of property by the lawful authority of a public servant) corresponds to Section 218 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, in force from 1 July 2024. Under the BNSS First Schedule, BNS 218 is non-cognizable, bailable, triable by Any Magistrate; punishment: Imprisonment for 6 months, or fine of 10,000 rupees, or both.

Text of BNS Section 218

218. Whoever offers any resistance to the taking of any property by the lawful authority of any public servant, knowing or having reason to believe that he is such public servant, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine which may extend to ten thousand rupees, or with both.
