From Section 69 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019: a complaint within two years of the date the cause of action arose. A commission can admit it later if you show sufficient cause for the delay.
What consumer commissions look at in health insurance claims
These are the questions the commissions actually decided in these cases:
- Was the insurer right to reject the claim?
- Do the hospital bills match the medical records?
- Room charges: the room you stayed in, against the room your policy covers
- Doctor-visit charges above what the policy allows
- Did the exclusion the insurer relied on really apply to you?
- Were you given the policy's terms and conditions?
- Was the claim payable at all?
- Did the insurer fail in its service to you?
Real cases. Every case is different.

My health insurance claim was rejected. What can I do?
Ask the insurer for the reason in writing, if the rejection letter doesn't give it, and complain to its grievance office first. If that doesn't settle it, you can go to the Insurance Ombudsman or to the District Consumer Commission.
Consumer commission or Insurance Ombudsman: which one?
The Ombudsman is free and usually quicker, but it can only take your complaint after you've gone to the insurer first, and it has a limit on how much it can award. A consumer commission can also order compensation for harassment and your costs.
Can I file a consumer complaint myself, without a lawyer?
Yes. You can file it online through the e-Daakhil portal, before the District Consumer Commission where you live or where the insurer has an office.
How long does a case take?
It depends on the commission and on whether the insurer contests. Our Legal AI shows how long cases like yours took.
