From Section 69 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019: a complaint within two years of the date the cause of action arose. A commission can admit it later if you show sufficient cause for the delay.
What consumer commissions look at
- The insurer says an illness wasn't disclosed: was it, and did it matter?
- Alleged wrong age, job or income in the proposal form
- Should the insurer have checked the details itself?
- Lapsed policy benefits, and refund of the premiums paid
Real cases. Every case is different.

The claim was rejected for hiding an illness. Is that final?
No. Commissions have asked whether the illness was material, and whether the insurer proved it was hidden. Under Section 45 of the Insurance Act, a policy can't be questioned on any ground after it has run three years.
The policy lapsed. Is anything payable?
It depends on the policy and how long premiums were paid; some policies keep a paid-up value. Commissions have also looked at refunds of premiums.
Consumer commission or Insurance Ombudsman: which one?
The Ombudsman is free and usually quicker, but it can only take your complaint after you've gone to the insurer first, and it has a limit on how much it can award. A consumer commission can also order compensation for harassment and your costs.
